More about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Flags
Flags of All Nations proudly sells Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, which are available on our website. We have a range of sizes and have fully sewn or printed options available for you to choose from in this category.
The Aboriginal Flag was designed in 1971 by Aboriginal Artist Harold Thomas, a descendant from the Luritja people of Central Australia and who holds the intellectual property rights to the Aboriginal flag. This flag is one of the official flags of Australia and holds special legal and political status. This flag is often flown together with the National flag and Torres Strait Islander flag, which is also an official flag of Australia. The Aboriginal flag was originally designed for the land rights movement and became a symbol of the Aboriginal people of Australia. The colours of the Aboriginal flag are representative of the Aboriginal people, the red of the earth and the sun in the centre, the giver of life.
The Torres Strait Islander flag was adopted in 1995 and was designed by the late Bernard Namok from Thursday Island and is an official flag of Australia. This flag was created as a symbol of unity and identity for the people of Torres Strait Islands – these islands are a group of over 200 small islands off of the Australian mainlands northern most point. There are seventeen inhabited islands are two communities located at the tip of Cape York that are classified as part of the Torres Strait. The Torres Strait itself is the waterway to separates Australia and Papua New Guinea. The colours represent the following – green for the mainlands, Australia and PNG. Blue, for the island waters. Black for the people of Torres Strait. In the centre of the flag is a Dhari or headdress, with a white 5 pointed star in the centre which is for the 5 major island groups of TSI as well as sea-faring navigation. White is to represent peace.
