The Uzbekistan flag design cosists of a horizontal tricolour in blue, white and green stripes, with thin red stripes dividing the larger stripes. The top blue stripe depicts a white crescent and 12 white stars divided into 3 rows in the upper canton (hoist side). The Uzbekistan flag design was adopted in 1991 when Uzbekistan gained independence. Prior to this design, the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR) flag was used.
