Materials
Materials
Printed flags are made from knitted polyester, a light fabric which flies well in light winds.
Fully Sewn flags are made from woven polyester (also known as flag bunting), which is thicker and considered more durable than knitted polyester.

If you'd prefer to dispose of your old flag at home, national flag protocol advises the flag should be destroyed privately and in a dignified way, such as being cut into small unrecognisable pieces and disposed of with household rubbish.
The Puerto Rico design dates back to 1868 and consists of 5 bands of red and white as the field, and a blue equilateral triangle on the hoist side, displaying a white 5-pointed star in the centre. This design has stayed the same aside from the shade of blue, which has been a lighter, aqua blue (1895) and also a darker shade of blue. The use of this flag initially was short lived, when the use of the Puerto Rico flag was outlawed in favour of the Spanish flag from 1492 to 1898 and the American Flag from 1898 to 1952. In 1952, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico adopted the 1895 design as its official flag however the shade of blue has never been defined so it is common to see the flag in differing shades of blue across the island.
