The design of the Indian flag is a horizontal tricolour, in India saffron, white and India green. In the centre of the white band is a navy blue wheel comprising of 24 spokes. Symbolically, the saffron represents sacrifice and patriotism. White is for truth, actions and purity of our thoughts. Green represents life and prosperity. The blue wheel is called the Ashoka Chakra, which stands for progress. The Chakra or wheel also symbolises the Power of the State governed by Dharma. This design was adopted in 1947, and by law in India, it is to be made of Khadi, which is a type of hand-spun cloth or silk, made popular by Gandhi.
