If you'd prefer to dispose of your old flag at home, national flag protocol advises the flag should be destroyed privately and in a dignified way, such as being cut into small unrecognisable pieces and disposed of with household rubbish.
This flag design was approved in 1990 and has been used since 1997. The design is a red flag with a stylised white five petal flower in the centre. The colour red is significant in itself as it is identical to the red of the National PRC flag and was chosen to signify the link re-established between post-colonial Hong Kong and China. Red also a festive colour for Chinese people and is used to convey a sense of celebration and nationalism. The 5 stars are the Chinese flag are also represented on the Hong Kong flag in the petals of the flower.
