Guinea-Bissau Flag - The national flag of Guinea-Bissau was adopted in 1973 when independence from Portugal was proclaimed. This flags colours is also based on traditional Pan-African colours of red yellow and green. The design is a red vertical stripe on the hoist side, with a yellow stripe sitting horizontally on top a green stripe. The red stripe has a black star in the center of it, the star being said to represent the unity of Africa.
Red is said to represent the blood shed during the struggle for independence, yellow for the sun and green represents hope. The flag is heavily influenced by the flag of Ghana, and in addition to the symbolism mentioned, the red is said to also represent the blood of the martyrs, the yellow the mineral wealth and green the forests.
