California Bear Flag - The bear flag came about in 1846 after 33 American immigrants in Alta California who had entered without official permission, rebelled against the Mexican departments government. The California Republic was an unrecognised breakaway state for 25 days in the military controlled area north of San Fransisco, in and around what is now Sonoma County in California. The Bear Flag Revolt and what remained of the California Republic ceased to exist on July 9 when US Navy Lieutenant Joseph Revere raised the USA Flag in from the of Sonoma Barracks.
