This flag design was adopted in 1944, and consists of a blue field with a white and red cross, with the intersection of the cross over to the hoist side of the flag. The cross is said to represent Christianity, it was adopted and became the National flag when Iceland gained independence from Denmark in 1918. The colours stand for the elements of the Island. Blue for the ocean and sky, red for the fire created by the volcanoes and white for the ice and snow that covers the land.
