Materials

Printed flags are made from knitted polyester, a light fabric which flies well in light winds.

Fully Sewn flags are made from woven polyester (also known as flag bunting), which is thicker and considered more durable than knitted polyester.

This flag design was adopted in 1958 and consists of a tricolour design, with a vertical white band on the hoist side and a red and green horizontal bands making up the rest of the flag. This flag was adopted 2 years before independence as Madagascar prepared for a referendum on its status in the French community. Symbolically, the colours present the history and peasant classes of Madagascar. Red and white were the colours of the Merina Kingdom. which succumbed to France in 1896. Green was the colour of the Hova, the largest peasant class of commoners, who played a significant role in the anti-French agitation and independence movement.
